COMPUS TWIN FULL ACCESS

A COMPosting, Urine Separating toilet which is remarkably compact for a twin vault toilet.

It is wheelchair accessible with a floor level only 150mm above surrounding ground level. A ramp of approximately 1.8 metres length will give access which complies with Building Regulations.

Two preformed vaults extend 800mm below ground level. They are used alternately on a minimum one year cycle.

We help with statutory permissions, installation and management guidance. We continue to provide support after installation.

It is designed to be functionally very robust and does not depend on any particular weather or climatic conditions or significant management time to perform reliably. For usage levels go to FAQs Question 6.

FIXTURES AND FITTINGS

A view inside the cubicle showing the toilet pedestal, ventilation duct, male urinal, hand disinfectant facility and grab rail fittings. We strongly recommend the hand gel disinfectant system which avoids the need for a water supply and basins which carry a risk of freezing and flood damage. Basins also reduce wheelchair turning space.

The grab rails consist of a hinged bar for the rear wall serving both pedestal positions and handrails for each position. Grab rails can be added later if you do not have any disabled users at the time of purchase.

The two nearest floor hatches facilitate emptying of the finished compost and the rear hatch provides the alternative pedestal position. The standard ventilation system is passive.

The wall mounted box contains soak - usually wood shavings - for putting down the toilet - see Technical Notes. Soak can be added by users or by a manager at the end of the day.

The toilet pedestal is designed to minimise cleaning requirements. It separates urine from seated users by means of a stainless steel urine separator. We supply a conventional ceramic urinal for male use.

Due to the remote siting of many of these installations we do not supply an alarm system usually required under building regulations for disabled access cubicles.

BUILDINGS

We can supply two types of prefabricated building specifically designed to fit with the toilet components and to provide wheelchair accessibility.

There is a timber framed, timber clad version with full lining [shown right] and a metal framed, metal clad building [shown at the top of this page] with timber lining.

Both come with full installation instructions and the internal walls are templated to show fixing positions for grab rails etc.

COMPLETE SYSTEM WITHOUT A BUILDING

We can offer components for this toilet for those wishing to design and construct their own buildings. We supply the twin vault chamber and lid [which serves as the floor of the building], pedestal, urine separator, vent and all specialist components.

We will help with general advice on building construction.

COMPUS COMPACT

We now have available a new compact toilet, the COMPUS COMPACT.

This toilet is urine separating and can have either a fan driven or passive vent depending on circumstances. Wood shavings, or similar material, are added to the toilet after "number twos" and these solids are eventually emptied into an outdoor dedicated composting chamber to complete composting. If you have ever had to empty a wet chemical toilet you should find this much nicer to deal with.

It's a good toilet for a private summer house, garden studio or other fairly low use situation with familiar users. The pedestal can be supplied in white at additional cost.

ABOVE GROUND & BESPOKE

We can assist self builders who want to construct above ground toilets. We have generic designs which we can assist in tailoring to your particular needs. We then supply appropriate components and can provide telephone support during the construction process.

If you are thinking of designing a building and fitting composting toilets it is essential you contact us at an early stage - they are not like WCs!

The example shown here is a privately owned garden pavilion with above ground vaults.

SPARES

We have available a range of small components including pedestals, directional cowls, soak storage boxes.

Toilet pedestal and urine separator

We can supply the urine separating toilet pedestal to be used in Above Ground & Bespoke systems, the design of which we assist with.

Wall mounted soak box

Fits behind the pedestal in the COMPUS TWIN system toilet and acts as a rest for the seat lid. Helps keep the cubicle clear of obstructions. Now supplied as standard with our COMPUS TWIN Full Access installations.

Directional cowls

Directional cowls for vent pipes. We stock 2 sizes which fit inside 110mm and 160mm plastic pipes respectively. These keep out rain and help to draw air up the pipe even in very light winds.

TECHNICAL

"Soak" - and the composting process. Whenever the toilet is used for defecation a small amount of soak material is added to the vault. Alternatively a suitable amount can be added at the end of the day by a manager. The purpose of soak is to [i] prevent the pile from becoming anaerobic by maintaining an open structure and soaking up excess moisture, [ii] adjust the carbon-nitrogen ratio by adding more carbon, [iii] cover the wastes. We will advise on a suitable soak if you install a COMPUS TWIN toilet.

Using the compost
Before coming back into use the vault which has been resting for a year or more is emptied leaving a small layer of compost in the bottom to supply decomposing organisms for the next cycle. The finished compost should be used or disposed of in accordance with Environment Agency and/or Local Authority guidelines. If required, further composting can be carried out in a dedicated composting facility on site before eventual use or disposal. As a general precautionary principle we advise against using finished compost on food crops, especially those where the edible part of the plant grows in contact with the ground.

Urine separation.
The toilets are urine separating. This is beneficial as it reduces the amount of soak material required and makes it possible to reduce vault size. It also avoids the need to drain the vaults and virtually eliminates any risk of ammonia smells. Urine is a very useful fertiliser since it contains an almost perfect balance of plant nutrients. We usually advise on disposal of urine to ground, subject to any statutory requirements.

Ventilation.
Passive or fan driven ventilation options are available. In the case of fully enclosed cubicles and toilets in buildings which have other functions as well we recommend fan driven ventilation using a 1W fan and this supplies the cubicle ventilation required under building regulations. With remote toilets on, for instance, allotment sites we have never known a case where passive ventilation was not wholly adequate.

Statutory regulations
It is often necessary to have planning and building control approval from the local authority before installing composting toilets. Although the responsibility for acquiring these consents rests with you, the client, we are happy to assist in acquiring them and have considerable experience in so doing. No local authority has so far refused. Representatives from the Building Research Establishment have inspected several NatSol toilets to assist them in determining appropriate standards and regulations for composting toilet installations.

PRICES

We don't put prices on our website. This is because most enquirers are not very familiar with composting toilet systems and may find it difficult to assess which product they require. Some of our systems are well suited to multi-user applications, such as allotment sites, and some only for low use, private applications. Sometimes we supply buildings, sometimes we don't. We prefer to discuss your requirements first and will only sell you a toilet if we consider it to be suited to your particular needs. In some cases it may be necessary to design a bespoke system.

Prices for our products are currently held for 2 months from the date of quotation.

We usually arrange carriage for our toilet systems and charge this at cost. We do not mark up carriage charges. Consequently, if the cost rises after the quotation we have no option but to pass this on.

If you are purchasing a wheelchair accessible toilet it should be possible to get a zero rating for VAT if more than 20% of your users are disabled OR if you are a registered charity OR if you are registered with the Inland Revenue for charitable purposes and have a gift aid number. Under some circumstances you may be able to reclaim VAT for up to 3 years after purchase.

Please call us on 01686 412653 or use the email form on the Contact page to get a price estimate or quotation. Thanks!
